Entry Level Jobs – Do's And Don'ts
All jobs have an entry level for the beginner in that area of interest. But just because the entry level job may be held by one who has never worked in the field before, it does not mean the job is poor paying. At least not poor paying when compared to the pay scales of other jobs. So entry level jobs may only relate to the fact that the job holder has never done this kind of job before.
Most companies have a period of probation for new hires of their entry level jobs. It is during this time the company may terminate your employment for cause, that is without giving a reason. So the it is up to you to show you can perform the functions of the job in order to keep the position. It is also the time where the company looks at your work ethic, how well you work with others, and if you are going to fit into the company profile for promotable people.
So, in order to be a survivor of the probationary period you will need to be at work on time. You will need to show your manager or supervisor you understand the function of the job and can carry out assignments. That you can work independently without constant supervision and are able to be a team player. The point is, you have to show you are competent in the position which you have been hired fo, and can work like you have been in the job for a long time.
The company will recognize there are certain aspects of the entry level job you have never done before and will take time to learn. But there are certain functions of any job you will need to demonstrate you know how to behave in, dress for, and act responsibly in, while doing the job. It is those intangible areas which can cause you problems in keeping a job if you are lax in your performance. Keep in mind you are being paid to perform a job, and not to keep your social network site updated., or to be on the phone with your friends chatting about your date Friday night, or what you plan to do after work. There may be people on the job doing those things, but they have been with the company a long time and have proven their worth, so they may have earned the right to slouch off time while at work. But, be aware, you do not know if those people, who are slouching off time at work, are not under the gun by Human Resources to be fired as soon as they have racked up enough infractions.
Therefore, be on your best behavior when just starting an entry level job, generally jobs which you were hired to do are yours to lose. You have already proven to your employer you have the credentials to do the job, you just have to show them you are competent enough to fill the position.
